Abstract

This article analyzes the status of the Albanian language under the influence of intra-ethnic and inter-ethnic globalization, within the broader framework of global change. In this context, Albanian faces two major challenges: (1) pressure from lexical borrowings from other languages; and (2) intra-ethnic globalization, related to the movement and merging of Albanian-speaking communities across various geographic and cultural regions. Since the 1990s, following major political, social, and economic shifts, the effects on Albanian’s development have become increasingly evident—not only in Albania but also in Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and other Albanian-speaking enclaves. Transitioning from an isolated, centralized society to an open and mobile one brought communities closer through migration and faster communication. These shifts have influenced how Albanian is used—its standard form, its interaction with dialects, and its tendency to absorb elements from other languages. This study explores how such influences are transforming Albanian’s public usage and its function as a national language, while highlighting the contemporary challenges of preserving and adapting it in a globalized context.
