Abstract

In February 1879, Sami Frashëri, Pashko Vasa, and Jani Vreto published Alfabetare e gjuhësë shqip, the same year the Society for the Publication of Albanian Letters was founded. This work, with both encyclopedic and didactic elements, is considered the first collective cultural publication of the Albanian National Awakening, aimed at teaching the Albanian alphabet and fostering national awareness. This intellectual elite, educated and active in Istanbul, contributed significantly to the codification of the Albanian language. The facsimile (anastatic) edition of the work, accompanied by philological commentary from contemporary scholars, has renewed scholarly interest in its value. This article explores the role of the Albanian Renaissance figures in shaping the language and their cultural activity in Istanbul, which served as a hub of Albanian intellectual life in the 19th century. Special attention is given to the importance of identifying and studying other unpublished works from the period, which remain valuable yet overlooked sources for Albanological research.
