Abstract

The purpose of this study is to shown data about the chemical characterization of essential oil of Helichrysum italicum plants from North-East Albania. The plants were sampling in August, 2014. Helichrysum italicum is a fl owering plant of the daisy family Asteraceae. It is sometimes called the curry plant because of the strong smell of its leaves. It grows on dry, rocky or sandy ground almost in all Albanian territory and also in Mediterranean countries. The plant produces oil from its blossoms which is used for medicinal purposes. It is anti-infl ammatory, fungicidal, and astringent. It soothes burns and raw chapped skin. It is used as a fi xative in perfumes and has an intense fragrance (1; 2; 3; 4; 5). Methods: The air dried plant samples were subjected to European Pharmacopoeia apparatu (Clevenger type) for 8 hours to obtain Helichrysum italicum essential oil. The chemical composition of the essential oils was analyzed using GC/FID technique. The oil of each Helichrysum italicum sample was injected in a Varian 450 GC. VF-1ms capillary column (30 m x 0.33 mm x 0.25 um) were used for separation of compounds. Conclusion: Limonene, Curcumene and Linaleol were identifi ed as main constituents and all analyzed essential oils of Helichrysum italicum samples from North Albania (6; 7; 8).
