Abstract

This article examines Ibn Rushd’s project to legitimise philosophy within Islamic thought, focusing on his seminal work Fasl al-Maqāl (The Decisive Treatise). Ibn Rushd defends the compatibility of philosophy with Islam and argues that philosophical inquiry is not only permissible but a religious duty for intellectually capable Muslims. He counters criticisms from prominent theologians like Al-Ghazali, emphasizing that reason and divine revelation originate from the same source and should be complementary. The study situates Ibn Rushd’s work in the political and intellectual context of 12th-century Cordoba under the Almohad dynasty, highlighting the influence of this rationalist atmosphere on his philosophical endeavors. By exploring the methods and arguments used by Ibn Rushd to reconcile faith and reason, the article underscores the enduring relevance of his ideas in contemporary discussions on the relationship between religion and rationality.
