Abstract

The acceptance of Islam among Balkan peoples, including Albanians, was largely peaceful and influenced by cultural, linguistic, and religious affinities rather than force. Therefore, the term “adoption of Islam” is more accurate than “Islamisation,” which often carries negative historical connotations. The spread of Islam in the region enriched both Muslim and non-Muslim societies through shared cultural and scientific contributions, reflecting Islam’s broader civilizational and theological significance.

Although the title of this work joins two seemingly distinct themes, the scientific dimension of Islam and the importance of interreligious tolerance, both are deeply connected. This study draws from numerous sources, particularly the Qur’an, which has long inspired literature, education, and moral thought in various languages, including Albanian. The multiple Albanian translations of the Qur’an demonstrate its enduring intellectual and cultural value.

Islam should not be viewed narrowly as a purely religious doctrine. Beyond its theological disciplines (Tefsir, Akaid, Hadith, Fikh, Ahlak), Islamic scholarship has shaped philosophy, ethics, education, and many scientific fields. Figures such as Avicenna, Averroes, Al-Biruni, Omar Khayyam, and Rumi exemplify Islam’s profound impact on world knowledge. Islamic philosophy promotes rationality, simplicity, and accessibility, distinguishing it from more mystical traditions.

The Qur’an and early Islamic scholars emphasize the pursuit of knowledge as a divine duty. Imam Ali famously stated: “Knowledge protects you, while you must protect your wealth; wealth decreases when spent, but knowledge multiplies when shared.” Such teachings reveal Islam’s deep respect for intellect, morality, and justice, as well as its rejection of oppression and inequality.

A central aspect of Islam’s humanistic spirit is tolerance, especially interreligious tolerance, which encourages dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. This approach contrasts with intolerance and moral rigidity, offering instead a model of understanding between different faiths. Positive examples of this coexistence can be found among Albanians, where Muslim and Christian communities have historically maintained harmony. This spirit of religious pluralism remains a vital bridge between civilizations and a foundation for mutual progress and peace.
