Abstract

This paper presents a general analysis, based on assessment indicators, of the achievement of our fourth-grade students in the international PIRLS 2021 test, which was focused on the achievement of students in reading literacy and the performance of fourth-grade students at the primary level in this academic field. The paper provides important and specific information regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on schools and on the results of students in our country but also in the countries with which we have made the comparison. Since PIRLS is a test that includes students from many countries around the world, the paper will present our achievements based on the PIRLS measurement indicators and compared with the achievement of countries of the Western Balkans region, with a focus on Albania, North Macedonia, Croatia and Slovenia. Based on the achievements of Kosovar students, compared with the overall achievement in PIRLS 2021 but also compared with the achievement of neighboring countries, the comparison of data and their analysis have led the research to a number of conclusions, recommendations and proposals that can be of service to policymakers at the municipal and central levels for taking measures to improve and raise the primary education system to an international level.
