The Great Muslim Scientist of XI Century, El-Biruni

Abstract

El-Biruni who lived in XI century is one of the greatest Muslim scientists of all the time. He wrote more than 180 books in several scientific disciplines such history, history of religions, geography, geodesy, philosophy, mathematics, trigonometry, astronomy, medicine and many other fields. His books were studied for centuries in the most known chairs of east and western universities. George Sarton would name the century when Biruni lived as “Biruni century” to express the importance and the contribution of him to the science and the humanity in general. The article tries to give some information about his life and works. Also to stress out some important achievements of Biruni such methodology, objectivism and other scientific results of him to the science in general. The data given about his life also provides some examples about the development of science in the eleventh century. Also Biruni is a good example how the knowledge has been transmitted throughout the ages and geographies. His professionalism, objectivity and profile of a scientist make Biruni and his works being studied nowadays, ten centuries later.
