Translation of the magazine “Edukata Islame” during its first two decades (1971-1991)

Abstract

From a historical perspective, “Edukata Islame” magazine represents the beginning of a new era of Islamic journalism in Albanian in the former Yugoslavia. It is the first magazine that was offered in an advanced technical and content version. As such, it would encounter various challenges and difficulties, taken into consideration by the founders and the editors from the very beginning. One of these challenges was the writing, therefore potential collaborators were proposed to bring translations as well as authorial writings. This paper aims to shed light on the role that translation has played in supplying and enriching the magazine “Edukata Islame” with religious materials. In order to reach this goal, the paper deals with three important issues: motives, themes and languages from which it was translated. The findings of the paper confirm the complementary role of translation in the magazine “Edukata Islame”. They also confirm the magazine's great commitment to translation, making it never give up on it as an important means of transferring knowledge and knowledge from other languages. Based on this, the paper brings the recommendation that translation, along with authorial writings, should continue to remain a source for Albanian Islamic journalism in general, and for Islamic Education in particular.
