Inter-religious understanding among Albanians
Abstract
Inter-religious tolerance, understanding and harmony among Albanians, is one of three most prominent cultural values of Albania. Faik Konica wrote, “I believe, it is widely known that Albanians are tolerant towards the other religions and, perhaps, this is the only country in Europe, where neither a single war of religious character has ever taken place. For this reason, it has often been talked by some about the Albanian 'skepticism'".
There are found many characterizations related to this issue in the writings of non-Albanian thinkers and travelers. For example, Hugo Adolf Bernatzk wrote about the Albanian society of 1929, when he visited Albanian towns and regions, “Catholics, Orthodox Christians and Muslims live in peace in this small country, even, in villages they may live in community”.
To the Albanian, religious wars are unknown and inconceivable. (2003:153) We think that the motive force of functioning at full capacity of the cultural value Inter-religious tolerance, understanding has to do with an inherent profile of the psycho cultural patterning of the Albanian people, which has been revealed, even though quite faintly, by the most qualified researchers of the spiritual construction of Albanians.
Edith Durham wrote that the Albanian has “the instinct of a nobleman” (1990: 544).
Freed for the herd instincts, Albanians have never maltreated social groups in minority, formed based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion etc.
Historically and actually, social groups in minority have been protected by tolerance, tendency for understanding and human spirit of social groups in majority.
The human profile of the social or religious group in majority in proportion to other social and religious groups in minority appears as active among Albanians independently from their religious affiliation Such a profile, in a way has functioned as a spiritual space that has enabled the spread in Albanian in the form of cults. (Macionis, J., 2005) during the last 15 years of sufficient religious beliefs that did not exist before in our society .
