Abstract

The linguistic variety of the village of Seman and the other varieties of Myzeqe are an important part of the Albanian dialectal network. In order to collect the most valuable data from this area, Jani Thomai and Jorgji Gjinari used the methodology of field linguistics. Initially, they drafted a communication strategy that paved the way for conversations (mainly with men and women aged 45 to 80, in some cases even over 80 years old, but without ignoring the conversation with young people). They presented the informants' answers to the questions of dialectological and lexical questionnaires, as well as gave careful reviews of data on the distribution of some elements and phenomena related to dialectology. Thomai & Gjinari offered a general vision of the sociological appearance of dialectological variation in their respective monographs in 1958 and 1963. The authors discovered the influence of varieties and foreign languages on some toponymic geographic names found in the territory of Myzeqe. Attention was paid to the examination of linguistic variants in phonetics and morphology. At the phonetic level, based on the postulate that "the same can be said in different ways", they presented data on vocal alternations and consonant variations, data on linguistic changes that have occurred in the linguistic system of the given variety, and lastly, data on socio-historical variations that expressed the selected informants for the survey. An important part of the reasoning carried out in their dialectological monographs concerns the morphological variation in the varieties of this area. Even in this regard, variable phenomena are observed that are examined in detail according to the permanent or accidental presence in a given variety. The ethnic, linguistic and cultural landscape of the variety of the village of Seman and of the other varieties of Myzeqe is also revealed through lexical diatopisms (regionalisms, dialectalisms). These elements are included in the dictionaries compiled by Jani Thomai and Jorgji Gjinari as part of their respective monographs, as well as in the "Dictionary with words and expressions from Myzeqe" written by the tireless tracer of phraseology, Jani Nushi. In a general overview Nushi notices that the dictionaries prepared by Thomai and Gjinari mark the beginning of the work for a lexical nomenclature, which was enriched and became part of several explanatory dictionaries in Albanian (1954, 1980, 1984, 2002, 2006).
