Abstract

The Arbëresh dialect of Italy constitutes a linguistic archipelago of particular interest to etymology. In this dialect are preserved many words that have lost in their old homeland. New words has been also created, with great interest for the etymology. The name thadër is inherited from the root of IE. ṡes- by comparing with Old Ind. çásati, çastrá-, Gr. κεάζω, Lat. castro-āre. The name jetull has De Rada, while Giordano has hjetull. Therefore jetull comes from hjetull and this from it. fetta with the suffix -ull. The verb gëlmonj is an internal formation from the name glemb with the suffix -o. With this word is related gëlpenje, a plural form with the suffix -enj as lumë ~ lumenj. The conjunction ndovorria is a creation within the sentence in a hypothetical period (ndo-vo-rri), where vo is an interfering element with the particle o and the consonant -v- for the disappearance of hiatus. The name ciezë, Lat. Alauda cristata, is an internal formation from an onomatopoeic root. Other similar internal formations are cimblor formated from the root cimb and the suffixes -lë + -or; citanik from citë with the suffix -anik; whereas grah is an inherited verb, close to Skt. gṛnḆti “call”, lit. giriù, gìrti “praise”.
